The Rusinga CBO Water System

Piping Clean Water, Transforming Health and Lives

The Challenge: For generations, access to safe drinking water has been a critical issue on Rusinga Island. Most residents have historically been forced to consume untreated water drawn directly from Lake Victoria, triggering a high prevalence of debilitating water-borne diseases. Furthermore, the burden of walking long, grueling distances to fetch water has heavily fallen on women, young girls, and grandmothers, taking away precious time from education and economic advancement.

Our Engineering & Solution: The Rusinga CBO Water System is a massive, community-driven infrastructure initiative designed to solve water scarcity in Rusinga Central and surrounding areas within Homa Bay County. The system uses industrial pumping machinery to draw raw water from Lake Victoria and route it directly to an advanced treatment and purification unit located approximately 2.3 kilometers away from the pumping station. Once thoroughly treated and certified safe, the water is pumped through a distribution network directly to the community.

Our Current Impact: Today, this infrastructure serves thousands of local residents. It delivers safe water through individual household connections, public water kiosks, healthcare facilities, and local schools. Clean water access has fundamentally transformed the learning environment, sanitation standards, and daily hygiene for students and staff across six key educational institutions:

  • Kaswanga Girls Secondary School

  • Kaswanga Primary School

  • Wanyama Primary School

  • Wanyama Secondary School

  • Wamwanga Primary School

  • Ogola Jaseme Secondary School

Our Partners: This phenomenal growth and infrastructural success have been achieved through the generous financial, technical, and strategic backing of international development partners and local government. We proudly honor and acknowledge:

  • The Town Hall of Alénya (France)

  • The Comité de Jumelage

  • ESF (Electriciens Sans Frontières / Engineers Without Borders)

  • The County Government of Homa Bay
